Wes Anderson’s Fantastic Mr. Fox (2009) is one of my favourite films, so to discover that Anderson was producing another stop-motion adventure – this time with dogs – I could not contain my excitement.

My enthusiasm overwhelmed me last night (21 September) when the trailer for Isle of Dogs was finally released. Inspired by the films of Akira Kurosawa and the stop-motion of Rankin/Bass Productions, Isle of Dogs is set twenty years in the future in the city of Megasaki City.

The canine population in Japan have succumbed to a flu epidemic, and are ordered by corrupt Mayor Kobayashi to be quarantined to aptly named Trash Island. The film follows a twelve-year-old boy, Atari Kobayashi (Koyu Rankin) as he begins a perilous mission to retrieve his exiled companion, Spots. Upon arrival, Kobayashi is met by a pack of mongrels – Chief (Bryan Cranston), Rex (Edward Norton), Duke (Jeff Goldblum) and Boss (Bill Murray) – who decide to aid him in his search and protect him from the Japanese authorities.

Isle of Dogs is adorned with a vast cast list (listed below) and is set to be released in the UK on March 30, 2018, via Fox Searchlight Pictures.
